AUSTIN CITY LIMITS RINGS IN 2011 WITH NEW EPISODE FEATURING CHEAP TRICK

LEGENDARY BAND’S ACL DEBUT PREMIERES ON PBS STATIONS NATIONWIDE ON JANUARY 1

For its first episode of the New Year, the award-winning PBS television series AUSTIN CITY LIMITS welcomes famed American rockers Cheap Trick to the Studio 6A stage for a new, hour-long episode. The performance marks the iconic band’s first appearance on the show, and it premieres on PBS stations nationwide on January 1, 2011.

Performing classics like “I Want You to Want Me,” “Surrender,” and “Dream Police” plus tunes from its more recent body of work, veteran rockers Cheap Trick show ACL viewers that they’re still going strong, more than 30 years after forming in Rockford, IL in the early 1970’s.

“Moving confidently into the future while remaining convincingly rooted in the past? Now that’s a neat trick,” said The New Yorker of the band’s 2009 release, The Latest.

“Cheap Trick is timeless!’ exclaimed series executive producer Terry Lickona. “Actually, the band started at almost exactly the same time as Austin City Limits, so after 36 years it’s about time they finally hit our stage. And they are still at the top of their game!”

In addition to the release of The Latest, Cheap Trick has recently written and performed the theme song to Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report. In its wildly successful history, the band has performed more than 5,000 concerts and has sold more than 20 million records worldwide.

Season 36 celebrates an exciting time in the history of AUSTIN CITY LIMITS, as the show tapes its last season in its original studio, which was designated last year as an historic rock and roll landmark by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. In early 2011, the show will move to its new home in the heart of downtown Austin at ACL Live the Moody Theater, a full-time music venue and state of the art production facility.

From the ACL taping program on March 18, 2010:

Cheap Trick may be one of the most covered bands of all time. Since the 70s they’ve been blending elements of pop, punk and even metal in a way that is instantly catchy and recognizable. Tonight they make their Austin City Limits debut performing songs from their newest releases plus a few classics.

With timeless songs including “I Want You to Want Me” and “Surrender,” Cheap Trick is a musical institution. With more than 5,000 performances, 20 million records sold, 29 movie soundtracks and 40 gold and platinum recording awards, the band has been honored repeatedly for their contributions to the music industry. And with their most recent albums, starting with 1997’s self-titled release, the band has “reclaimed its sound and legacy” (Chicago Tribune).

In the last few years, the band wrote and performed the theme song to Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report and performed the classic Beatles album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, complete with an orchestra and guest artists Joan Osborne and Ian Ball for many critically-acclaimed shows.

Their most current release, The Latest, has garnered glowing reviews worldwide and continues Cheap Trick’s reign as power-pop progenitors as they celebrate their 35th anniversary together. The Latest proves “no one beats them at their own game, and sometimes they even beat others at theirs,” wrote The Onion AV Club.

DREAM POLICE FEATURING CHEAP TRICK

DREAM POLICE FEATURING CHEAP TRICK
Premieres at Milwaukee’s Northern Lights Theater at Potawatomi Bingo Casino
on January 20th with Select Dates Through February 26th.

New Event featuring The Bombastic Symphonic Philharmonic With The Rhythmic Noise Mind Choir in Collaboration with Butch Allen, Bello Nock & Jim Yukich.

More than thirty years after the release of the internationally acclaimed album Dream Police, Cheap Trick is staging a multi-date show featuring songs from the platinum record. The Bombastic Symphonic Philharmonic With The Rhythmic Noise Mind Choir will perform alongside these and other hits from Cheap Trick’s extensive catalog. The run kicks off January 20th, 2011 and includes 12 dates through February 26th.

For Dream Police, the band teamed up with sought after production designer Butch Allen (Paul McCartney, Metallica, No Doubt) and comic daredevil/producer Bello Nock. World-class video and film director and longtime Cheap Trick collaborator Jim Yukich also contributed.

“Dream Police was the first record where we felt the songs were well-suited for orchestration; that was a very expansive time for us musically,” says bassist Tom Petersson.

“Since then, we’ve been fortunate to work with several world-class orchestras – live and in the studio,” adds lead vocalist Robin Zander, “and after 36 years together, our band is thrilled to have an opportunity to present our songs – both new and old – with an orchestra and a unique state-of-the-art production.”

The shows take place at Milwaukee’s recently renovated Northern Lights Theater at Potawatomi Bingo Casino, less than two hours away from Chicago. Retaining its intimate, up-close-and-personal atmosphere, the 500-seat theater ensures that there is not a bad seat in the house. The newly transformed, rich and modern space draws diverse internationally known musical and comedy acts with Dream Police being the premiere theatrical event in the venue.

Cheap Trick formed in the city of Rockford, IL in 1974.  The multi-platinum band has sold over 20 million albums and had numerous hits including “Surrender,” “I Want You to Want Me” and “The Flame.”
